Monitors Need to Be Reconfigured After Reinstalling Windows 98

If you reinstall Windows 98 on a computer that contains multiple monitors, you may have to reconfigure some monitors after Setup is completed.

The behavior can occur if you are using ATI video adapters. Windows 98 disables Plug and Play functionality for ATI video adapters because they do not handle Plug and Play correctly.

To work around this behavior, manually set each monitor connected to an ATI video adapter. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Display.
3. Click the Settings tab.
4. In the Display box, click the adapter you want, and then click Advanced.
5. On the Monitor tab, click Change.
6. Click Next, click "Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want," and then click Next.
7. Click Show All Hardware.
8. Click the appropriate manufacturer and model of your monitor, click Next, and then click Finish.
9. Click Close, and then click OK.

NOTE: Repeat steps 4-9 for each video adapter for which you have to set a monitor.
