SYMPTOMS

The hard disk in your computer may appear to be active even after the "It's now safe to turn off your computer" screen appears.

CAUSE

This behavior can be caused by the Advanced Power Management (APM) features in Windows 98 and does not cause any problem or loss of functionality.

MORE INFORMATION

On newer computers that use Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) features, APM features make it possible for you to put your computer in Standby or Hibernate mode to save power resources. The OnNow feature allows only the devices that need to be active to "wake up." In certain situations, the OnNow feature may continue to activate the hard disk even though the computer has shut down.
