Monitor Is Energy Star Compliant Check Box Is Unavailable

SYMPTOMS

When you view the Monitor tab in the Display Properties dialog box, the Monitor Is Energy Star Compliant check box may be unavailable.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if Windows 98 is configured to automatically detect Plug and Play monitors.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, disable automatic detection of Plug and Play monitors. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double- click Display.
  2. Click the Settings tab, and then click Advanced.
  3. Click the Monitor tab, click the "Automatically detect Plug and Play monitors" check box to clear it, click OK, and then click OK again.
  4. Restart the computer.

If Windows 98 is configured to detect Plug and Play monitors, it automatically detects if a Plug and Play monitor is Energy Star compliant.
