SYMPTOMS

When you start Windows 98, a dialog box containing no text may appear.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if you use a Compaq Presario computer, and the following lines are present in the [Drivers] section of the System.ini file:

   wave1=<path>\tamaudio.drv
   mixer1=<path>\tamaudio.drv

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, edit the System.ini file and disable the line that refers to the audio drivers. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type system.ini, and then click OK.
  2. Press F3, type tamaudio, and then press ENTER.
  3. Place a semicolon (;) at the beginning of each line that contains the tamaudio.drv text.

  1. On the File menu, click Save, and then click Exit on the File menu.
  2. Restart your computer.

MORE INFORMATION
