SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade to Windows 95/98/Me, you may see the "Getting Ready To Run Windows For The First Time" screen every time you start your computer.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Windows Setup program does not remove the Logo.sys file from the root folder.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, rename the Logo.sys file in the root folder. To do so, use the following steps:
  1. Restart your computer. For Windows 95, when you see the "Starting Windows 95" message, press F8, and then choose Safe Mode Command Prompt Only from the Startup menu. For Windows 98 and Windows Me, press and hold the CTRL key until the Windows 98 or Windows Me Startup menu appears, and then choose Safe Mode Command Prompt Only from the Startup menu.
  2. Type the following lines, pressing ENTER after each line:
    attrib -s -h -r logo.sys
    ren logo.sys logo.old
  3. Restart your computer.

APPLIES TO
