Slow Shutdown When Pressing the Power Button on Your Computer

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to shut down your computer by pressing the computer's power button, your computer may not shut down immediately.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if all of the following conditions exist:

  • Your computer has a sound card that uses Windows Driver Model (WDM) drivers.
  • You have configured the power button to shut down the computer in your computer's CMOS settings.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, shut down your computer by clicking Start, clicking Shut Down, clicking Shut Down, and then clicking OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows 98.
