FP98: Rapid Install of Server Extensions to IIS 4.0 Through MMC Fails

SYMPTOMS

On a multi-hosted Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) 4.0 computer, rapidly installing the FrontPage Server Extensions using the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) may result in the extensions installation not completing.

CAUSE

The FrontPage Server Extensions can only be installed to one location at a time.

WORKAROUND

When you use the MMC to install the FrontPage Server Extensions, wait until one virtual server's installation is complete before initiating installation against another virtual server.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft FrontPage 98 for Windows.

MORE INFORMATION

Using the FrontPage Server Administrator to install the extensions gives you a clearer indication of when one site is installed, and you can move on to installing to the next site.
