The Telnet server in Windows NT Services for UNIX can be set to use Windows NT LAN Manager (NTLM) authentication only. This ability provides increased security during the Telnet authentication and prevents telnet user credentials from being passed as clear text over the network.

When the Telnet server is set to enable only NTLM authentication, only Telnet clients that support NTLM authentication Telnet protocol may be able to connect to the Telnet server. Presently, only the Console Telnet client from Windows NT Services for UNIX supports NTLM authentication. The basic Telnet client included in Windows NT 4.0 does not support NTLM authentication. When the client is configured for NTLM authentication, the user may not have to enter his or her user name/password. Logging on may happen automatically for all domain authenticated users who have been granted telnet logon local user rights on the server.
