IntelliPoint Software Reports Errors in Windows 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you start the Microsoft IntelliPoint software, the Mouse Properties dialog box opens with the following options disabled:
  • Basics properties
    Pointer Speed
    Button Selection
  • Productivity properties
    Orientation
    ClickLock
  • Wheel properties
    Wheel Button
You may also experience the following symptoms:
  • When you enable the wheel, you receive the following error message:
    IntelliPoint is unable to change your settings. Close any open applications, save any open documents, restart Windows, and then try to change your IntelliPoint settings again. If you still have difficulty changing your settings, run IntelliPoint Setup to reinstall the files, and then start IntelliPoint again.
  • If you restart your computer and attempt to reinstall the IntelliPoint software, you receive the following error message:
    Setup has found that your operating system is a new version. Some compatibility problems could exist, meaning some features may not work or be displayed properly. Do you want to continue?
After you restart your computer, the following settings are not retained in Mouse properties:
  • StepSavers properties
    Focus
    ClickSaver
    SmartSpeed
  • Productivity properties
    Odometer
  • Visibility properties
    Sonar
    Vanish

CAUSE

These behaviors can occur if you are using version 2.2 or earlier of the IntelliPoint software. Version 2.2 and earlier is not supported in Windows 2000.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, upgrade to a newer version of the IntelliPoint software that supports Windows 2000.

Microsoft recommends that you uninstall version 2.2 or earlier of the IntelliPoint software until a new version becomes available.
