HOW TO: How to Divide a Large Root Web into Smaller Subwebs

Dividing a site into multiple subwebs makes it easier to perform administrative and authoring tasks, such as changing themes, publishing changes, and even finding specific files. In addition, if you have a large Web site, you can use subwebs to keep track of each author's work by assigning each author their own subweb. This article describes how to divide a large root Web into several smaller subwebs.

In FrontPage 2000, you can easily create subwebs by right-clicking a folder in your web and clicking Convert to Web.

Dividing a Large Root Web into Several Smaller Subwebs

1. Open the web that you want to divide into smaller subwebs.
2. Organize your content into folders within your web.
3. Right-click a folder that you want to make into a subweb, and then click Convert to Web.
4. You receive a message similar to the following:
   
   Changing this folder will cause pages in it to change:
   
   - Pages that include files may not be updated when included files change.
   
   - Hyperlinks on Navigation bars may be removed.
   
   Are you sure you want to do this?
5. Click Yes.

NOTES: If you want to use hyperlinks to move from the root Web to a subweb or between subwebs, you must use an absolute hyperlink like the following:
Also, if you use shared borders and navigation bars, you may experience some problems.
