Setup Cannot Find CD-ROM on Computer with Multiple CD-ROM Drives

SYMPTOMS

When Windows 98 Setup starts the last time, you may receive the following error message:
Please insert the disk labeled 'Windows 98 CD-ROM', and then click OK.
When you try to browse to find the Windows 98 CD-ROM, you cannot find the CD-ROM drive in the browse list.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if you have multiple CD-ROM drives installed on the computer, one using real-mode drivers and another using protected-mode drivers, and you are running Windows Setup using the real-mode CD-ROM drive. Setup detects the real-mode CD-ROM drivers and disables them.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:

Method 1

Start Windows Setup in the CD-ROM drive that is using the protected-mode CD-ROM drivers.

Method 2

When you receive the Windows 98 Setup error message, remove the Windows 98 CD-ROM from the CD-ROM drive that is using the real-mode drivers and insert it into the CD-ROM drive that is using the protected-mode drivers.
