WD2000: Spelling/Grammar Not Checked for Custom Footnote Text

When you perform a spelling or grammar check or both of a Word document that contains custom footnote reference marks, Word does not flag a misspelled custom footnote reference mark.

This functionality is by design and is a change from earlier versions of Word.

A custom footnote reference mark can contain a single word up to 10 characters in length. However, if you use a word as a custom footnote reference mark, Word does not check the spelling or grammar of the word.

To insert a custom footnote reference mark, do the following steps:

1. Position the insertion point in the text where you want to place a footnote.
2. On the Insert menu, click Footnote.
3. Under Numbering, select Custom mark, type in the custom footnote reference mark you want to use, and then click OK.
   NOTE: You can also use a symbol as a custom footnote reference mark. In the Footnote and Endnote dialog box, click Symbol. Select the symbol you want to use, and then click OK.

If you try to use a custom footnote reference mark that is longer than 10 characters, the following error message appears:
