When you perform a spelling or grammar check or both of a Word document that contains custom footnote reference marks, Word does not flag a misspelled custom footnote reference mark.
CAUSE
This functionality is by design and is a change from earlier versions of Word.

A custom footnote reference mark can contain a single word up to 10 characters in length. However, if you use a word as a custom footnote reference mark, Word does not check the spelling or grammar of the word. To insert a custom footnote reference mark, do the following steps:
