SYMPTOMS

When you post to a FrontPage Guestbook or Discussion Web and refresh the main page, the browser returns the following error:
HTTP Error 404
404 Not Found

The Web server cannot find the file or script you asked for. Please check the URL to ensure that the path is correct.

Please contact the server's administrator if this problem persists.
When you look in FrontPage or Windows NT Explorer, the Default.htm (or We.htm in the case of the Guestbook) is no longer there.

CAUSE

Norton Utilities are installed on the server, and it is set to use Norton Protect to protect files in the content area.

WORKAROUND

Set an exclusion for Norton Protect that excludes the directory containing the Discussion Web or Guestbook. To do this, perform the following steps:
  1. On the server, right-click the Recycle Bin and click Properties.
  2. Click the Norton Protection tab.
  3. Under System Settings, click Exclusions.
  4. In the dialog box, type the path to your Discussion Web (for example, C:\Inetpub\Wwwroot\Foldername, where Foldername is the name of the folder containing your Discussion Web or Guestbook).
  5. Click Add.
  6. Click OK twice.
You will need to stop and restart the Norton Protect Service in order for the exclusion to take effect. To do this, perform the following steps:

  1. Click Start and point to Settings.
  2. Click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click the Services icon.
  4. Scroll down to Norton Unerase Protection.
  5. Click Stop (the service will now stop).
  6. Click Start (the service will start and the exclusion will be in effect).
