WD2000: IPF in Gdi.exe When Opening, Printing, or Repaginating Large Document

SYMPTOMS

When you open, print, or repaginate a document, or you scroll through a document by using the Microsoft IntelliMouse wheel, you receive the following error message:

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
When you click Details (on Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, press ALT+D), you receive the following message:
WINWORD caused an invalid page fault in GDI.EXE at 0005:00000136.
NOTE: The actual memory address may vary.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following are all true:
  • Your document uses fonts containing more than 1,024 glyphs (for example, the Tahoma font).

    (A glyph is the displayed form of a character. It is an element of a font, namely an alphanumeric character, a special character, or a graphics element. In contrast to a character, the width and height, stroke width, and other metric sizes of a glyph are specified.)

    (In general, the term font is used as a synonym for character set, and glyph for character.)

    -and-
  • Your document contains 50,000 or more characters.

    -and
  • One of the following printers is configured as your default printer:
    • Any Hewlett-Packard LaserJet III series printer

RESOLUTION

This problem is resolved in Windows 98 Second Edition. To determine the version of Microsoft Windows that you are using, follow these steps:
  1. Double-click My Computer.
  2. On the Help menu, click About Windows.
If you have Microsoft Windows 98 (original edition), you can correct this problem by installing the Microsoft Office 2000 Update for Microsoft Windows 98.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows 98.
