SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to uninstall Internet Explorer 5 or later, you may receive the error message
Microsoft Internet Explorer version Setup was not completed successfully.
where version is the version of Internet Explorer.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if the Advpack.dll file on your computer is earlier than version 5.00.2014.200.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, install version 5.00.2014.200 or later of the Advpack.dll file by starting and then canceling Internet Explorer Setup:
  1. In the Windows Update Setup Files folder, double-click the Ie5setup.exe file.
  2. When the End-User License Agreement (EULA) screen appears, click Cancel.
  3. Click Yes to quit Setup.

When you install Internet Explorer and then install a program that replaces the Advpack.dll file with a version earlier than version 5.00.2014.200, the uninstall process does not successfully finish.
