PPT2000: Error Message: Can't Start NetShow Server Due to Missing Server Options

ERROR MESSAGE

When you attempt to start an online broadcast in PowerPoint, you may receive the following error message:

Can't start NetShow Server due to missing server options.

CAUSE

This error message occurs when the NetShow Program has been deleted from the NetShow server, or if PowerPoint loses access to the NetShow Program on the server.

THINGS TO TRY

To use the Online Broadcast server feature, the following software must also be present on the server system:

Microsoft Windows NT Server version 4.0
Service Pack 3 (or later) for Microsoft Windows NT Server
Microsoft Windows NT Server NetShow Services

NOTE: The following steps assume that your NetShow 3.0 Server is configured, running without error, and able to stream media on demand from the ASFROOT directory.

To test whether this is true, place the Sample.asf file into the C:\Asfroot directory on the NetShow Server.

On the Presenter computer, click Start, click Run, and type:

mms://servername/sample.asf

The Sample.asf file should play in Windows Media Player. If your NetShow server is not installed or configured properly, online broadcasting does not function properly. In this case, consult your NetShow documentation.

Port Conflicts

This error message may also occur if the HTTP or MSBD ports that are set for the .asd files are not accessible. To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

Open the Audio.asd file.
In the Netshow Encoder dialog box, click Next five times, so that the Finish button is visible.
Click Query next to both the MSBD on port and the HTTP on port settings, to search for free ports to connect to.
Click Finish to close the Netshow Encoder dialog box.
To test the new settings, click Start on the Encode menu in the NetShow Encoder. If the test is successful, the Summary Statistics icon turns green and displays the On Air caption.
Stop the stream. On the File menu, click Save. Close the NetShow Encoder window.

Repeat steps 2 through 6 for the Rex.asd and the Video.asd files.
