Cannot Uninstall SP2 After Installing Encarta Virtual Globe 99

SYMPTOMS

After you install Microsoft Encarta Virtual Globe 99 on a computer with Internet Explorer 4 Service Pack 2 (SP2) installed, SP2 may no longer appear in the list of programs that can be removed by using the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the following registry key is removed when you install Encarta Virtual Globe 99:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\IE40

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, reinstall Internet Explorer Service Pack 2, and then uninstall it.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem does not occur if you install Encarta Virtual Globe 99 before installing SP2.
