Requirements for Imaging Clients with Riprep.exe

You can use Riprep.exe to install an image of a client computer on a Remote Installation Service (RIS) server. The image can then be downloaded by clients using PXE boot ROMs or a RBFG-generated floppy disk.

Because the client initiates the download starting from the Text-mode portion of Setup, Riprep allows for differences in hardware among client computers (such as the boot device). However, Riprep does have some restrictions.

When you image a client using Riprep.exe, the following requirements must be met:

• At least one CD-ROM-based image must exist on the server, in case the client needs system files at a later date.
• Only one partition is allowed.
• Client computers must use the same hardware abstraction layer, or HAL (ACPI and non-ACPI).
• Target client computers must have a local hard disk equal to or larger in size than the imaged computer.
• When you are creating the image, the client must not contain any encrypted files.
