Internet Explorer Error Message When Viewing a Security-Enhanced Web Site

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to gain access to a Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protected Web site using Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0, Internet Explorer may generate an access violation in Wininet.dll. In Windows NT, you may receive a Dr. Watson error message.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if Internet Explorer is set to use HTTP 1.1 through a Microsoft Proxy 2.0 server that is set to use NTLM authentication only.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Internet Explorer service pack that contains this fix.
