SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install the Microsoft Windows 98 Service Pack 1 (SP1) on a Windows 98 Second Edition-based computer, you may receive the following error message:

This update is not designed for this version of Windows. Press OK to exit.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the Microsoft Windows 98 SP1 is designed as an update only for Windows 98, not Windows 98 Second Edition.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, do not try to install the Microsoft Windows 98 SP1 on a Windows 98 Second Edition-based computer.
