XL2000: Incorrect Range of Values Displayed on X-Axis of XY (Scatter) or Bubble Chart

SYMPTOMS

When you create a chart in Microsoft Excel 2000, or open a chart that you created in an earlier version of Excel, and hide a row on the worksheet, the scale of values displayed on the x-axis of the chart changes to an incorrect scale.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • Your chart is one of the following types:

    • XY (Scatter)
    • Bubble

    -and-

  • One or more rows in the range of cells used as the source data for your chart are hidden.

    -or-

  • The values used as x-values in your chart are stored in discontiguous areas on your worksheet.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).

To temporarily work around this problem, use the appropriate method for your situation:
  • Unhide any hidden rows in the source data for your chart.

    -or-

  • Arrange the values to be used in your chart so that they occupy a contiguous area on your worksheet.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a.
