Hibernate Mode Causes Windows 98 Second Edition to Become Unstable

SYMPTOMS

If you have a computer that supports Hibernate mode and Standard VGA PCI Graphics video adapter drivers are installed, you can not use Hibernate mode.

After this happens, Windows 98 Second Edition may become unstable.

For example, the Start menu may not open and you cannot open Control Panel.

CAUSE

This issue can occur because the Windows 98 Second Edition standard video adapter drivers do not support Hibernate mode.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the video drivers that were included with the video adapter.

To work around this issue, use the specific video drivers for your video adapter that are contained in Windows 98 Second Edition and do not use Hybernate mode.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
