OFF97: How to Deploy a Customized Office Shortcut Bar During Setup Using Network Installation Wizard

This article explains how to distribute a customized Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar (OSB) during the Microsoft Office 97 Setup.

NOTE: This article assumes that all computers that are installing Microsoft Office 97 have identical configurations.

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

You can can use the Network Installation Wizard (NIW) to configure Office 97 so that files are saved in the earlier version's file format.

1. Customize the OSB on a computer that has Office 97 installed on it.
2. To close the Office Shortcut Bar, right-click the Office Shortcut Bar title bar, and then click Exit on the shortcut menu. You will be prompted with the following message:
   You are closing the Office Shortcut Bar. The Office Shortcut Bar will start again automatically when you start Windows. Do you want the Office Shortcut Bar to start automatically when you start Windows?
   Click Yes.
   
3. Create a folder in your Office 97 administrative installation named CustomOSB.
4. Copy the shortcut files (*.LNK) and table files (*.TMP) to the CustomOSB folder. The files are located in the following folder:
   
   Drive:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Shortcut Bar
   where Drive is the hard disk drive where you installed Office 97 on your computer.
5. Click Start, and then click Run.
6. In the Open edit box, type regedit and then click OK.
7. Locate and select the following registry key:
   HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Shortcut Bar
8. On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File.
9. In the Save in box, select the network server where your Office 97 administrative installation is installed.
10. In the File Name edit box, type UserOSB and then click Save.
11. Locate and select the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Shortcut Bar
12. On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File.
13. In the Save in box, select the network server where your Office 97 administrative installation is installed.
14. In the File Name edit box, type CompOSB and then click Save.
15. Click Exit on the Registry menu to close the Registry Editor.
16. Start the Network Installation Wizard.
17. Select the Setup Table file that you want to customize (for example, Custom.stf), and follow the steps in the Network Installation Wizard until you reach the Add Files dialog box.
18. Click Add.
19. Select all of the shortcut files (*.LNK) and the table files (*.TMP) in the CustomOSB folder that is located on your Office 97 administrative installation, and then click Open.
20. In the Add File Properties dialog box, click ProgramFileFolder\Microsoft Office\Office\Shortcut Bar in the Destination Folder list box. Click OK.
21. Click Next.
22. In the Enter Short Folder Name dialog box, select the option that best suits your installation requirements, and then click OK.
23. In the Add Registry Entries dialog box, click Add.
24. In the Add dialog box, set the following values, and then click OK:

    Root:       HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    Data type:  SZ
    Key:        Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
    Value name: UserOSB
    Value data: \\<servername>\<sharename>\<fullpath>\UserOSB.reg
    
    						

25. In the Add dialog box, set the following values, and then click OK:

    Root:       HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    Data type:  SZ
    Key:        Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
    Value name: CompOSB
    Value data: \\<servername>\<sharename>\<fullpath>\CompOSB.reg
    
    						

26. Click Next, and proceed through the remainder of the Network Installation Wizard process.
