SYMPTOMS

When you try to start the Terminal Server client program on your Windows 98/95-based computer, you may receive the following error message:
MSTSC caused a general protection fault in gdi.exe 0014:0000048E

CAUSE

This issue can occur if there is a damaged font in the Fonts folder.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem:
  1. Re-install Windows, and then test to determine if the issue is resolved. If the issue is not resolved, continue to step 2.
  2. Restart your computer in MS-DOS mode, verify that you can use your CD-ROM drive, and then change to the Windows folder. Type ren FONTS BADFONTS, press ENTER, change to the CD-ROM drive, and the run Windows Setup. Test to determine if the issue is resolved. If the issue is resolved, your damaged font is now located in the BADFONTS folder, and you can add these fonts back into the FONTS folder one at a time to find the damaged font, and then delete it.
