To compact the message store, press OPTION while starting Outlook Express 5.

You receive the following message:
Would you like to compact the database?
If you click Yes, the messages are compacted, any unused spaces are removed from the database. If you click No, you receive the following message:
Would you like to do a complex rebuild of the database?
If you click Yes to compact the database, any unused spaces are removed from the database, data that is corrupted is removed and links are broken . If you click No, a rebuild of the database is not done.
