SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to open certain file types, a security warning that prompts you to save the file to your hard disk automatically issues. These file types cannot be altered in Outlook, so you are unable to add a new file type or remove one that already exists.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).

To obtain SR-1/SR-1a, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

A hotfix is now available that addresses this issue for non-secure builds of Outlook 2000.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, submit a request to Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

Note If additional issues occur or if any troubleshooting is required, you might have to create a separate service request. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for this specific hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Customer Service and Support telephone numbers or to create a separate service request, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Note The "Hotfix download available" form displays the languages for which the hotfix is available. If you do not see your language, it is because a hotfix is not available for that language. The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:
Filename Version
-------------------------------
Emsmdb32.dll_0005 5.5.3139.0

Envelope.dll 9.0.0.4201

After you apply this hotfix, two registry string values can be used to store the list of file extensions. These two registry string values control the warning dialog box for attachments:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Outlook\Security\RemoveWarningFileTypes
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Outlook\Security\AddWarningFileTypes
