SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade a computer running Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows 95 with multiple hardware profiles to Windows Millennium, you are prompted to select which hardware profile to use. When this occurs, you receive the following message: Dock Change

Windows is unable to determine your hardware profile. Is "Original Configuration" the correct profile?

Press Y for Yes or N for No:Y After you receive this message, you may continue to be prompted to choose a hardware profile during each reboot and Setup will repeat the standard selection process of each configuration to start Windows. Also, additional hardware profiles beyond the original configuration may not load.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because Windows Millennium cannot determine which profile to use because real-mode profile detection is no longer included in the Io.sys file, and this prevents Setup from completing. Because of this, you may experience the symptoms listed earlier in this article.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, remove the multiple hardware profiles, and then restart the computer.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
