SYMPTOMS

When you connect to a Web site, you may receive the following error message:

An ActiveX control on this page is not safe. Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page. As a result, the page may not display correctly.

CAUSE

This error message can occur if the computer contains the following file in the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder:

Name: Comcat.dll
Version: 5.0
Size: 6 kilobytes (KB)

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

Copy or extract the Comcat.dll file version 4.71 from one of the following sources to a temporary folder:
- Another computer that is running Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
- A Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 CD-ROM
- An Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 2 CD-ROM
Start a command prompt session.
Right-click the taskbar, and then click Task Manager.
In Task Manager, on the Processes tab, click Explorer, and then click End Process. This quits the graphic shell, but the command prompt is still active.
Delete or rename the Comcat.dll file in the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder.
Copy the Comcat.dll file version 4.71 from the temporary folder to the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder.
From the command prompt, start Explorer.exe again by typing explorer.exe, and then pressing ENTER.
Type exit to quit the command prompt session.
Start a command prompt session.
Type the following command at the command prompt to register the Comcat.dll file again:
regsvr32 %systemroot%\system32\comcat.dll
