Removing multimedia codecs (for example, media control devices, audio codecs, and so on) can be useful for troubleshooting multimedia issues. After you remove these devices/codecs and restart the computer, Windows 2000 only reinstalls the Microsoft PCM converter. All of the other devices/codecs are not automatically reinstalled.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs because you can only reinstall multimedia codecs using the Add/Remove Hardware wizard.
RESOLUTION
To reinstall multimedia codecs in Windows 2000, use the following steps:
