DNS Server Problem When Dynamic Updates Occur with Conflicting Entries

Your Windows 2000-based Domain Name System (DNS) server may generate an "access violation" error and cease to function after it receives a dynamic update.

This behavior can occur if a CNAME is in conflict with the A record, causing the access violation.

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 1.

The problem occurs only if the following sequence of events and conditions occurs:

• An A record exists for a domain (for example, the A record is DOM1.DOMAIN in a domain named DOM1.DOMAIN).
• A single update packet is received that:
  • Adds an A record for DOM2.DOMAIN and adds a CNAME record for DOM1.DOMAIN.
  • Points to DOM2.DOMAIN.
