Error Message Occurs When Attempting to Use System Restore

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to use System Restore, you may receive the following message:

System Restore has been turned off. To turn on System Restore, open the System Properties in Control Panel, and then click the Performance tab. Click File System, click the Troubleshooting tab, and then clear the Disable System Restore check box.

After you follow the steps in the error message, and you attempt to start System Restore again, you receive the same message.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because there is not enough free space on your hard disk. In Windows Millennium Edition (Me), System Restore requires a minimum of 200 MB of free space after setup is complete to be enabled automatically. During setup, no warning message is displayed that tells you that there is not enough free disk space for System Restore to be enabled automatically.

WORKAROUND

To enable System Restore, make sure that there is more than 200 MB of free space on the Windows Me system drive.
