SYMPTOMS

When you install a service pack, the files in the System_drive:\Cmdcons folder are not updated.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, reinstall the recovery console from a CD that has the service pack files integrated into it. To do this, use the following command at a command prompt:

winnt32.exe /cmdcons

If a CD that has the service pack files integrated into it is not available, follow these steps:

Connect to the network or computer on which you want to create the distribution folder.
On the network distribution share, create a distribution folder for the Windows installation files.

An example of this is C:\Winflat.
Insert the Windows CD into the CD or DVD drive, and then copy the contents of the CD-ROM to the distribution folder that you created in step 2.
Remove the Windows CD from the CD or DVD drive, and then insert the Service Pack CD. Alternatively, you can the download the entire service pack self-extracting executable.
To apply the service pack to the Windows installation files in your distribution folder, follow these steps:
1. Extract the contents of the service pack to the C:\Spflat folder.
  For example, run the following command at a command prompt:
  WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe /x
  Note Using the /x switch will prompt for where you want to extract the service pack files. Locate the c:\spflat directory, and then click OK.
2. Run one of the following commands at a command prompt:
  - For Windows 2000:
    c:\spflat\i386\update\update.exe -s:c:\winflat
  - For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003:
    WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe /integrate:c:\winflat
  c:\spflat\i386\update\update.exe -s:c:\winflat
Note The name of the .exe file depends on the actual service pack with which you are working.
Run winnt32.exe /cmdcons command from c:\winflat\i386.
