SBS: 4.5 Fax Update for Windows 2000 Clients

Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server (SBS) version 4.5 includes a suite of client/server programs including a fax service. This includes fax client software for Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, and Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 client workstations. A fax update that supports faxing from Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional clients is now available.

There are three tasks to accomplish to install the updated fax service and Windows 2000 Professional fax client:

1. Download the updated files package.
2. Install the updated service on the SBS server.
3. Install the client update package on Windows 2000 Professional client.

To Download the Updated Files Package

To Install the Fax Update on the SBS 4.5 Server

This procedure updates the SBS fax service and installs a Windows 2000-compatible fax printer for each fax printer you currently have installed. For example, if you have printers called fax and fax2 that service Windows NT, Windows 95, or Windows 98 clients, additional printers are set up named, fax-w2k, and fax2-w2k, and these printers service Windows 2000 Professional clients.

Before beginning the update process:

• Clear the fax printer queue.
• Close Control Panel.
• Close any open fax printer dialog boxes.

1. Download the Windows 2000 Professional update files, packaged as Sbfupd.exe, to a new folder on the SBS server.
2. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Command Prompt.
3. Open the folder where you saved the file.
4. Run Sbfupd.exe.
5. Click Yes to continue.
6. When you receive the message that tells you the service is updated, click OK.

To Install the Client Update Package

NOTE: If you have not already upgraded a client to Windows 2000 Professional, complete these steps before you start the Windows 2000 fax client installation.

To continue with the update if you have already upgraded to Windows 2000 Professional, go to the The Update Procedure section.

1. Remove the current SBS fax client program.
   1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
   2. Click Add/Remove Programs.
   3. Click Microsoft Fax Server Client.
   4. Click Add/Remove.
   5. Click Yes to confirm you want to remove the program.
   6. Click OK when the uninstallation program finishes.
2. Verify the fax printer is deleted.
   1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
   2. Verify there are no fax printers present. If there are any fax printers remaining, click to select the printer and then press DELETE.
3. Remove the fax mail transport and fax address book from Microsoft Outlook.
   1. Right-click the Outlook icon on the desktop, and then click Properties.
   2. Click Fax Address Book to select it, and then click Remove.
   3. Click Fax Mail Transport to select it, and click Remove, and then click OK.

The Update Procedure

If this is a new installation of Windows 2000 Professional, set up the client in the SBS Console on the SBS server.

1. On the Windows 2000 Professional client, map a network drive to the share on the SBS server that contains the update. For example:
   \\server name\ClientApps\MS\Fax\W2K
2. Click Start, and then click Run. In the Open box, type cmd, and then press ENTER.
3. Switch to the drive you mapped to the share point.
4. In the Open box, type sbfsetup.exe -tc, and then press ENTER.
5. Click I Agree, to the End User License Agreement.
6. Type the server name and fax printer (for example, \\server\fax-w2k ), and then click Next.
7. Type the user's full name and fax telephone number, and then click Next.
8. In the dialog box for Windows Messaging, select the default. There is no Windows Messaging for Windows 2000 Professional. Click Next.
9. Click Finish to complete the fax client installation and update.

NOTE: In these steps, run the program from a command prompt. If you attempt to browse to the file and run it, the program does not install properly and you may invalidate the license agreement.

After You Complete the Setup

If the SBS 4.5 fax client is installed before you upgraded to Windows 2000 Professional, remove the folders and icons from the old version. Control Panel now contains a SBS Fax icon and a Fax icon. The Fax icon is used to configure the Windows 98, or Windows NT fax client information. During the Windows 2000 upgrade, it is replaced by Personal Fax for Windows. If you do not have a local modem installed, this icon does not start the fax service.

To remove previous versions of the fax client:

1. Right-click the Start button, and click Explore.
2. In the Folders pane, under the Documents and Settings folder, click All Users, click the Start Menu folder, and then click Programs.
3. Click to select the Microsoft Fax Server Client folder, and then click Delete on the File menu.
4. In the C:\WINNT\System32 folder, rename the following files:
   • Fax.cpi
   • Faxcfg.cpl
   • Faxclien.cpl

These are control panel files from previous Windows fax client installations, or the Windows 2000 Professional personal fax installation. The only valid fax control panel file should be the Sbfcfg.cpl file.

Additional Release Notes

This list compares the fax client for Windows 2000 Professional to other versions of the fax client.

• Personal cover pages are not copied from the server to the client. You must copy them manually, or use the cover page editor to create a new page.
• Fax client Help does not function properly.
• After you run this update, you have two fax-related icons in Control Panel. The Fax icon is used to configure the Windows 2000 Personal Fax Service settings. If you do not have a local modem, you receive the following error message when you click this icon:
  Couldn't configure the fax server.
  Windows 2000 Personal Fax Service does not run unless you have a local modem installed.
  
  
• You can use both the Windows 2000 Personal Fax Service and the Small Business Server Fax client on the same computer, but this can be confusing for some users. You must change the default printer so that programs use the correct fax printer, or use one of the fax send wizards.
• To update several computers, you must manually update each computer because the SBS Console does not add this software. The software installation share is similar to:
  \\server name\ClientApps\MS\Fax\W2K.
• If you run the update while the fax configuration page is open, the following error message is generated:
  Cannot copy the file :\FaxBuild\setupbin\faxcfgd.dll to C:\WINNT.SBS\System32\faxcfgd.dll (Windows Error 32)
• If the fax-w2k printer already exists, you receive the following error message:
  Cannot add printer (Windows Error 1802)
