No Drive Letter Assigned to USB or IEEE 1394 Storage Device

SYMPTOMS

You restart Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), and then attach to your computer a Universal Serial Bus (USB) or an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (IEEE) 1394 external storage device. The device does not appear in the My Computer window or in Windows Explorer, and is not accessible.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur when all drive letters are already assigned to other devices, making no additional drive letters available.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, disconnect mapped network drives or other storage devices, freeing up a drive letter to assign to the additional storage device.
