Incorrect Error Message Double-Clicking Lock Icon in SSL-Secured Connection

SYMPTOMS

When you are connected to a secure site, you can double-click the secure lock icon at the bottom-right of the Internet Explorer window to view the certificate information. After the certificate information is displayed, you may receive the following incorrect error message in the certificate information:

This certificate has failed to verify for all of its intended purposes.

This is an incorrect error message. The certificate is a valid certificate if a secure connection was established.

CAUSE

This behavior is caused by an issue in the way that Internet Explorer reads some of the CERT chain information. This causes in incorrect error message to be displayed in the certificate information window.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem.
