Virtual Directories Displayed with Stop Sign Symbols

SUMMARY

Internet Information Services (IIS) virtual directories that map to the SharePoint Portal Server Web Storage System may display stop sign symbols in the IIS Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in. Also, IIS will write the following errors to the event log when it fails to access the SharePoint Portal Server virtual directories:

These stop sign symbols and event log messages are benign error indicators.

Because the SharePoint Portal Server Web Storage System is installed and started after IIS, IIS cannot gain access to the SharePoint Portal Server virtual directories. Therefore, IIS displays stop sign symbols in MMC.

To clear the stop sign symbols, restart the IIS Web service after the Web Storage System has been started. You can also configure the Web service to start manually. After you restart the server, the Web Storage System starts automatically, and then you can manually start the Web service. The stop sign symbols are no longer displayed.
