Random General Protection Faults with Comet Cursor Version 1.5 Installed

SYMPTOMS

When you use Internet Explorer, you may randomly receive the following error message:
Iexplore has caused a General Protection Fault in Shlwapi.dll
When you use Internet Explorer with the Internet Explorer Error Reporting tool installed, you may randomly receive the following error message:
Microsoft Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
When you click To see what data this error report contains, click here and view the contents of the data error report, you might see an error signature that is similar to:
szAppName      szAppVer         szModName      szModVer         offset  
iexplore.exe  5.51.3020.2100   shlwapi.dll   5.50.4522.1800    00001a1a
					

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you have Comet Cursor version 1.5 installed on your computer. To determine if Comet Cursor has installed, please refer to the "More Information" section in this article.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, upgrade to Comet Cursor version 2.0.

To Determine If Comet Cursor Is Installed

If one or more of the following conditions are true, Comet Cursor is installed on your computer:
  • There is an arrow-like icon on the desktop entitled Comet Cursor.
  • Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs and look for a "Comet-Comet Cursor" entry.
  • There is an arrow-like icon in the taskbar in the vicinity of the clock.
  • Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to see if Comet is in the close program dialogue.
