The PS/2 Mouse May Not Work After You Upgrade to Windows Millennium Edition

If you upgrade your computer to Windows Millennium Edition (Me), and then you attempt to use your PS/2 mouse, your mouse may not work correctly or it may be completely disabled.

To work around this behavior, open the Device Manager, remove the hardware device listing for the PS/2 mouse, and then restart your computer. Your computer can redetect the mouse and install the appropriate mouse driver. To use the keyboard to remove the mouse:

1. Press CTRL+ESC, use the arrow keys to click Settings, click Control Panel, and then press ENTER.
2. Use the arrow keys to click System, and then press ENTER.
3. Use the arrow keys to click the Device Manager tab, and then press the TAB key to click Computer.
4. Use the arrow keys to click Mouse, press the RIGHT ARROW key to expand the Mouse branch, and then press the DOWN ARROW key to select the mouse entry.
5. Press the TAB key to click the Remove button.
6. Press ENTER to remove the mouse, and then press ENTER when you are prompted to confirm the removal of the mouse.
7. Press the TAB key to click Close, and then restart your computer. Your mouse is redetected and reinstalled after your computer starts.

If the preceding steps do not resolve this behavior:

1. Physically remove the PS/2 mouse from the computer, and then replace it with a serial mouse.
2. Restart your computer. The computer detects and installs the serial mouse.
3. Remove the serial mouse from the computer, and then replace it with the PS/2 mouse.
4. Restart your computer. The computer detects and installs the PS/2 mouse.

This behavior may also occur if you transfer a hard disk (that has Windows Me installed) from one computer to another computer.
