SYMPTOMS

When you open a Microsoft Word 97 document in Microsoft Word 2002 or in Microsoft Word 2003, the first footnote appears on the second page, even though the reference to it appears near the top of the first page. This problem also occurs in earlier versions of Word.

CAUSE

Word 2002 and Word 2003 preserve the footnote layout of previous versions of Word documents.

WORKAROUND

In Word 2002 and in Word 2003, a compatibility option preserves the layout of footnotes as they were in Microsoft Word 6.0 for Windows, Microsoft Word for Windows 95, and Microsoft Word 97 for Windows. This option is turned on by default in Microsoft Word 2002. To view or change this option, follow these steps:
  1. Open a new blank document.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Compatibility tab.
  3. In the Recommended options for list, click Microsoft Word 97.
  4. In the Options list, click to clear the Lay out footnotes like Word 6.x/95/97 check box.
  5. Click OK.
When you repaginate the document, the footnote is moved to the previous page where it would have appeared in Word 97.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Word 2002 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Office Word 2003
