Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry
SYMPTOMS
When restarting a computer after installation of Visual Basic 6.0, the user receives the error message: "Rpcss illegal operation". The system will then attempt to connect to the Internet and return the error message "could not upload DSP files." This can also occur at startup for some applications.
CAUSE
If remote connections is enabled, the system may try to initiate an Internet connection upon startup of the operating system. This behavior is often referred to as "autodial" or "autoconnect."
RESOLUTIONWARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may
require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve
problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own
risk. To resolve this problem, turn off the remote connection option by changing the registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole
string values EnableRemoteConnect and EnableDCOM from Y to N. Normal Internet activities will not be affected by changing this setting to disable remote connections. This setting is the default for most systems. However, enabling remote connections is necessary for some features of DCOM. REFERENCESFor additional information, click the article numbers below
