PUB2002: Overview of the Publisher 2002 Update: June 21, 2001

Microsoft has released an update to Microsoft Publisher 2002 that adds functionality to Publisher 2002. An additional feature, "Export as Web Page", provides the ability to export HTML without special information that is used only when the Web page is reopened (round tripped) inside Publisher 2002.

When you use the Export as Web Page command, the file sizes of your Microsoft Publisher Web pages are substantially smaller and download more quickly over slower Internet connections.

This article describes how to download and install the Publisher 2002 Update: June 21, 2001.

NOTE: This Public Update is part of the Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 1 (SP-1), but for your convenience the Public Update also is available individually, as described in the "More Information" section of this article. If you already applied Office XP SP-1, you do not need to apply this Public Update. How to Download and Install the Update

Client Update

If you installed Office XP from a CD-ROM, you have two options:

• Use the Office Product Updates Web site to automatically install all of the latest updates that includes all available Service Packs and Public Updates.
  -or-
• Install only the Public Update by using the steps described later.

Both options require that you have your Office XP CD-ROM available throughout the installation process.

Office Product Updates

To have the Office Product Updates Web site detect the required updates that you must install on your computer, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

After detection is complete, you receive a list of recommended updates for your approval. Click Start Installation to complete the process.

Install Only Publisher 2002 Update

Follow these steps to download and install the client update:

1. Using your Web browser, browse to the following Microsoft Web site:
   Click here to download the Client Update (http://download.microsoft.com/download/officexpstandard/pub1001/1/win98me/en-us/pub1001.exe)
2. Click Download Now. Click Save this program to disk, and then click OK.
3. Click Save to save the Pub1001.exe file to the selected folder.
4. In Windows Explorer, double-click Pub1001.exe.
5. If you are prompted to install the update, click Yes.
6. Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
7. Insert your Office XP CD-ROM when you are prompted to do so, and then click OK.
8. When you receive a message indicating that installation was successful, click OK.

NOTE: After you install the update, you cannot uninstall it.

Administrative Update

If you installed Publisher from a server location, the server administrator must update the server location with the administrative public update and deploy that update to your computer.

If you are the server administrator, follow these steps to download the administrative update:

1. Browse to following Microsoft Web site:
   Click here to download the Administrative Update (http://download.microsoft.com/download/publisher2002/patch/5.0.2919.6304.pb/w982kmexp/en-us/pub1001a.exe)
2. Download the file to your desktop.
3. In Windows Explorer, double-click the Pub1001a.exe file.
4. Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
5. In the Please type the location where you want to place the extracted files box, type C:\pub1001a, and then click OK. Click Yes when you are prompted to create the folder.

To update your administrative installation, follow these steps:

1. Click Start and then click Run. Type the following command in the Open box
   msiexec /a Admin Path\MSI File /p C:\pub1001a\mspub_admin.msp SHORTFILENAMES=1
   where Admin Path is the path to your administrative installation point for Office XP (for example, C:\OfficeXP), and
   
   where MSI File is the MSI database package for the Office XP product (for example, Pub.msi).
   
   
2. After this command line is finished, run the following command line:
   msiexec /a Admin Path\MSI File /p C:\pub1001a\pubintl_admin.msp SHORTFILENAMES=1
3. To deploy the update to the client workstations, click Start and then click Run. Type the following command in the Open box
   msiexec /i Admin Path\MSI File REINSTALL=PubPrimary REINSTALLMODE=vomus
   where Admin Path is the path to your administrative installation point for Office XP (for example, C:\OfficeXP), and
   
   where MSI File is the MSI database package for the Office XP product (for example, Pub.msi).

How to Determine Whether the Update Is Installed

The update replaces the files Mspub.exe and Pub6intl.dll. The version of Microsoft Publisher 2002 is updated to version 10.3005.2625.

Changes Made by the Update

The update replaces the Save as Web Page command with Export as Web Page. The Export as Web Page command allows you to create smaller Web pages by omitting XML information and Office XP cascading style sheets (CSS) tags that are used to enable high-fidelity "round tripping". "Round tripping" is the ability to save a Publisher file (*.pub) as a Web page (*.htm), and then reopen the Web page as a Publisher file, without losing any Publisher features that are not directly supported by HTML.

NOTE: You can still save as high-fidelity HTML after the product update is applied. However, the process changes. To save as high-fidelity HTML, follow these steps:

1. On the File menu, click Save As.
2. In the Save as Type drop-down list, select either of the following file types:
   • Web Page(*.htm;*.html)
   • Web Archive(*.mht;*.mhtml)
3. Name the file, and then click Save.

Known Issues

To be displayed correctly, form controls in Publisher 2002 require the high-fidelity CSS.
