Open PowerPoint presentation in different modes in Web browser

When you view a Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) document in a Web browser and click a hyperlink that references a PowerPoint presentation, the presentation opens in slide show mode in the browser window. This article explains how to change this default so that you can open the presentation in a separate window or open the presentation for editing.

Edit Presentation in Web Browser

To edit the presentation in a Web browser, open the presentation in the default slide show mode, and then click Edit Slides on the Edit menu of the browser.

You can add a registry key that controls how a PowerPoint presentation is opened by a hyperlink or from the Address box in a Web browser. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
2. Locate and click the following key in the registry:
   HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PowerPoint.Show.8
3. On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:
   Value name: BrowserFlags
   Data type: REG_DWORD
   Radix: click Hexadecimal
   Value data: a
4. Quit Registry Editor.

The value of a causes the presentation to be opened in edit mode. The value of 8 causes the presentation to be opened in a new window in show mode. The value of 0 or the absence of this registry key causes the presentation to be opened in the browser window in show mode.
