Computer Hangs When It Resumes from Hibernation

SYMPTOMS

Your computer may stop responding (hang) when resuming from hibernation if an command prompt was open and not minimized when the computer entered hibernation. It may be necessary to remove and reapply power to the computer before it will restart successfully.

CAUSE

This problem occurs on computers that are equipped with 1.3 gigahertz (GHz) and faster processors, such as Intel Pentium 4 processors. The problem is purely a function of processor speed and it is not limited to a specific brand of processor.

The cause is described in more depth in the "Cause" section in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article, with the exception that it is not necessary to have more than one command open, or more than one hard disk:

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain and apply the update that is documented in the Knowledge Base article:

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, minimize all command prompt windows before you put the computer in hibernation.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition.
