PPP Does Not Work If a PPP Server Does Not Provide a Gateway IP Address

SYMPTOMS

A Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) dial-up connection may not work properly if the PPP server does not provide the IP address of a gateway in its IPCP response. Also, the PPP client always requests the IP address of a Domain Name System (DNS) server even if the DNS server IP addresses are statically configured.

CAUSE

If the PPP server does not provide the IP address of a gateway in its IPCP response, PPP adds a default gateway address of 0.0.0.0. This causes TCP/IP to not correctly route packets to the PPP interface.
