Prompt Asks for Upgrade Each Time You Sign In to Windows Messenger

Each time you sign in to Windows Messenger, you may be prompted to upgrade the program.

This behavior can occur if you copy and paste the Windows Messenger executable file to the desktop instead of creating a shortcut.

To resolve this behavior, make sure that the Windows Messenger icon on your desktop is a shortcut. If the icon is not a shortcut, delete the icon and then create a shortcut to Windows Messenger.

First, find out whether the Windows Messenger icon on your desktop is a shortcut:

1. Right-click the icon, and then click Properties. Make sure that the Shortcut tabbed page is selected.
2. See whether the icon has an arrow in the lower left corner. If this arrow is present, the file is a shortcut.

If the Windows Messenger icon is not a shortcut, delete the icon, and then create a new shortcut on your desktop:

1. Right-click the icon, and then click Delete.
2. On the taskbar, click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Windows Explorer.
3. Browse to and then click the Messenger folder.
4. Right-click msmsgs, and then click Create Shortcut.
5. Drag the shortcut to the desktop.
