Screen Stays Black for Several Minutes Before "Please Wait" Message Appears After You Run Factory.exe

SYMPTOMS

When you run Factory.exe to update installed drivers on Windows XP, your screen may remain black for two to five minutes before you see the "Please wait" message that shows that the computer is responding to your request. You may think that the computer is frozen, although it is not frozen.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows XP. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows XP Service Pack 1.
