ENT2001: Folders Disappear or Error 1500 Message Is Displayed When You Attempt to Connect to a Hotmail Account

In Entourage for Mac or Outlook Express for Macintosh, when you attempt to send or retrieve mail from a Microsoft MSN Hotmail account or attempt to configure a new Hotmail account after October 25, 2001, the following behavior may occur:

• All of the Hotmail folders disappear.
• After you configure a Hotmail account, no folders are displayed.
• The following error message is displayed:
  The Hotmail folder list could not be received.
  HTTP error.
  The server cannot fulfill the request. Error: 1500
• The following error message is displayed:
  The Hotmail folder list could not be received or Could not retrieve mail from the account <name of Hotmail account>. Error: 17599
• Entourage quits with the following error message:
  The application Microsoft Entourage has unexpectedly quit.
  The system and other applications have not been affected.
• Entourage quits when running AppleScripts, or schedules to access and update Hotmail accounts.

This behavior can occur because the Hotmail servers were updated on October 25, 2001 to provide greater security. These security updates disabled client programs' ability to gain access to or send mail from Hotmail.
