GP Faults Generated After Restarting a Program

SYMPTOMS

If you close a 16-bit program that is listed as not responding in the Close Program dialog box and then restart the program, you may receive a general protection (GP) fault error message.

CAUSE

When you close a program normally, the program's dynamic-link libraries (DLLs) are unloaded from memory. When you use the Close Program dialog box to close a program that is not responding, the program's DLLs are not unloaded and are not reinitialized properly when you restart the program.

RESOLUTION

Shut down and restart the computer.

MORE INFORMATION

This situation does not occur with 32-bit programs.

To access the Close Program dialog box, press CTRL+ALT+DEL.
