When you check the grammar of a phrase containing a state or U.S. territory
name followed by the word "island" (lowercase) and a period, you receive
the following error message:
Application error in Winword.exe
-or-
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
-or-
Invalid page fault in module GRAM32.DLL
For example, the error messages above will occur if you check the spelling
of any of the following phrases. This happens with all United States state
names (and some U.S. territory names).
Carolina island. California island. Guam island. New York island. Puerto Rico island. Rhode island. Washington island. STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the products listed at the
beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Word 97.
WORKAROUND
Type the word "island" with a capital letter "I," or remove the period from
the end of the phrase before you check the grammar in your document.
