FP98: Auto Thumbnail Has Broken Hyperlink to Image After Publishing Web

SYMPTOMS

If you are using the Auto Thumbnail feature, you will notice broken hyperlinks to the image file after you publish your Web.

CAUSE

When you insert an image from a location other than the current Web, make a thumbnail and save the page, the thumbnail has an absolute link to the source image.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, use either of the following methods.

Method 1: Import the Image into Your Web

Import the images into your current Web, make the Auto Thumbnail image and save the page. To do this, open your Web in FrontPage Explorer and then follow these steps:
1.On the File menu, click Import.
2.In the "Import File to FrontPage Web" dialog box, click Add File.
3.From the Add File To Import list, select the files you want to import and click Open.
4.Click OK.
5.In FrontPage Editor, open the page on which you want to make an Auto Thumbnail.
6.On the Insert menu, click Image.
7.In the Image dialog box, select the image you want to use and click OK.
8.Select the image and then click Auto Thumbnail on the Tools menu.
9.On the File menu, click Save.

Method 2: Insert an Image from a Location Other than the Current Web

If you insert an image from a location other than your current Web, save the page before you make the Auto Thumbnail image. To do this, follow these steps:
1.On the Insert menu, click Image.
2.In the Image dialog box, click the "Select a file on your Computer" button.
3.Select the image you want to use and click OK.
4.On the File menu, click Save.
5.In the Import Embedded Files dialog box, click OK.
6.On the Tools menu, click Auto Thumbnail.
7.On the File menu, click Save.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

NOTE: In order for the Auto Thumbnail feature to use a relative path the images need to be included in the current Web you are working on.
